The steel structure is designed atop the access gallery of the "Eroii Revolutiei" Metro Station, enhancing the aesthetics of a highly complex intersection while providing seamless tram-to-metro connectivity and a safe pedestrian underpass for the eight-lane boulevard. The structure spans 110 meters in length and 21 meters in width, with a maximum height of 17 meters.
The custom-built arches are fabricated from welded sheet I profiles, with primary arches measuring 300x25 mm for the flanges and 823x12 mm for the web. The secondary arches feature 300x20 mm flanges and 500x12 mm webs. The maximum span reaches 35 meters at a height of 17 meters. The foundation consists of individual micro-slabs, each supporting three to five arches. Weighing approximately 500 tons, the structure is engineered to withstand wind, snow, seismic forces, and additional loads from the covering and lighting installations.
Project Challenges and BIM Integration
The project's primary challenges included strict time constraints and complex geometry. Despite these difficulties, the structure was completed in under two months, thanks to the integration of Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology for seamless data exchange between engineering, architecture, and structural analysis.
Modeling the intricate arch geometries was a significant challenge, but BIM import and alignment facilitated an accurate and efficient process. The design of the connections also posed difficulties; however, using IDEA StatiCa, force distribution and node topologies were effectively transferred, allowing for a safe and cost-efficient design. Given the exceptionally tight deadline for the feasibility study phase, BIM technology enabled rapid structural verification, design optimization, and quantity estimation. The concept phase detailing was conducted in ALLPLAN through IFC export from SCIA Engineering.
The initial model was created in Allplan, aligned in SCIA, and then exported for connection detailing in IDEA Statica and foundation analysis in Frilo Statics. The final detailing was performed using Tekla Structures for the steel components and Allplan Engineering for concrete and reinforcement details.
BIM-Driven Engineering Approach
Working directly with BIM models from the architectural team enabled precise structural analysis, allowing for the evaluation of global stress and strain distribution in a comprehensive 3D model. This approach facilitated the accurate determination of dynamic characteristics and rapid quantity estimation, ensuring efficiency and precision throughout the project.
