The project presented unique challenges, beginning with its complex geometry. The new structure was built atop an unfinished underground parking facility originally intended for a different purpose. To accurately model the three-dimensional reality of this foundation, Allplan played a crucial role in creating a detailed BIM model. This model was then transferred and aligned in SCIA Engineer using BIM Toolbox tools, allowing the seamless integration of the steel and glass superstructure with the underlying concrete infrastructure.

Project Overview
The building itself is relatively small, consisting of two stories constructed above the inclined roof of the underground parking. With a total built area of 1,563 m², including an 800 m² ground floor, the structure rises 5.32 meters above the parking level. Designed to serve as a visual landmark, the entire building is enveloped in glass and surrounded by a dynamic fountain with specialized lighting, conceived by mechanical engineer Alin Epure, recipient of the Engineer of the Year 2016 award in Dubai. One of the primary structural challenges was concealing the steel framework within the exhibition space to create the illusion of an entirely glass-constructed building.

Structural and Seismic Design Challenges
The most complex aspect of the project was modeling the intricate interplay between reinforced concrete, steel, and structural glass, while ensuring overall stability under seismic loads. To achieve this:

The structural glass elements were initially modeled as 1D elements to determine accurate force and displacement distributions.
A detailed 2D shell model was then used to analyze worst-case scenarios, focusing on spider connections and glass-steel interactions to identify stress concentrators.
The final design ensured a balance between safety and economic feasibility.
All structural components underwent verification through SCIA Engineer’s Design Modules for Reinforced Concrete, Steel, and Structural Glass. The structural glass elements were specifically designed in accordance with EN 16612 using SCIA Engineer’s integrated structural glass add-on.

SCIA Engineer was selected for this project due to its BIM certification and its capability to:

Import and accurately align complex geometries.
Perform multi-material design calculations for concrete, steel, and glass within a single environment.
The integration of these advanced tools allowed for an efficient and precise engineering workflow, ensuring the project's success.
